«My Nine Lives» is the short story collection by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, published by John Murray Publishers Ltd in paperback (288 pages, in English).
The narrator of each story shares a common Central European Jewish origin, but lives a different existence: in India or New York, married, a dependent daughter, a scholar, or a naive young woman. Jhabvala reflects on chance and choices, asking what would happen if an alternative life were granted.
Published in 2005, in some bibliographic records it appears with the subtitle «Chapters of a Possible Past».
Aimed at a general audience interested in literary fiction and stories with autobiographical resonances.
Ruth Prawer Jhabvala was a British and American novelist and screenwriter. She is best known for her collaboration with Merchant Ivory Productions, made up of film director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant.
