In 1970s New York, Ray Carney tries to leave his criminal past behind to be a good father and an exemplary shopkeeper. However, the city has become a hostile and dangerous place, with a war between the Black Panthers and the police. To please his daughter May, Ray asks a retired policeman, Munson, for a favor, who commissions him a morally questionable job. This crime novel by Colson Whitehead revives the universe of Harlem with corruption, speculation and fires.
