In the seventh volume of the "Roman Mysteries" series, Jonathan and his friends are called to Rome by Emperor Titus in the winter of 80 A.D. The plague is wreaking havoc on the city since the eruption of Vesuvius, and the emperor suspects that someone is trying to destroy it. Jonathan, Flavia, Nubia, and Lupo accompany Doctor Mordecai to investigate who this mysterious enemy is. Despite the danger, the four friends travel through Rome from the imperial palace to Tiber Island, and Jonathan discovers that the plague is not the greatest danger they face.
