«L'Immeuble Yacoubian» is the novel by Alaa El Aswany, published by Actes Sud in paperback (327 pages, in French).
Set in an iconic Cairo building constructed in the 1930s, the novel follows the intersecting fates of several residents: a young Islamist who dreamed of becoming a policeman, a homosexual journalist, a nostalgic aristocrat, an unscrupulous businessman and a humble young woman. Through them, El Aswany portrays without judgment the political corruption, social inequalities, sexual repression and the rise of fundamentalism in contemporary Egypt.
Translated from Arabic (Egypt) into French by Gilles Gauthier. Originally published in 2002; this French edition is from 2006.
