«Leyenda del César Visionario» is the historical novel by Francisco Umbral, published by Bibliotex in hardback (190 pages, in Spanish).
Set during the Spanish Civil War, the novel portrays Francisco Franco and a group of Falangist intellectuals who tried to moderate the new regime. The adventures of a young typographer introduce a personal, bittersweet counterpoint to the collective drama, in a work with the strongly rhythmic prose characteristic of Umbral.
It belongs to the collection «100 mejores novelas en castellano del siglo XX» from Biblioteca El Mundo; the work won the Premio de la Crítica de Narrativa Castellana, and includes a prologue by Pere Gimferrer.
Aimed at readers of literary fiction with an interest in the Spanish Civil War and the figure of Franco.
Francisco Alejandro Pérez Martínez, better known as Francisco Umbral, was a Spanish journalist, novelist, biographer and essayist.
