«Le Mal Noir» is Nina Berberova's novel, published by Actes Sud in paperback (112 pages, in French).
A Russian émigré, marked by the death of his companion in a bombing, begins the path of exile towards the United States with a stopover in Paris. The novel explores the «mal noir», a Slavic sadness tinged with fatalism, and the protagonist's progressive detachment from the people and places he leaves behind.
Translated from the Russian by Luba Jurgenson. It was published in French in 1989 in the «Romans, nouvelles et récits» collection by Actes Sud.
