Le Lys dans la vallée is a novel by French writer Honoré de Balzac, published in 1835. The story tells of the passionate and almost incestuous love between Félix de Vandenesse, a young man leaving adolescence, and Madame de Mortsauf, a mature woman. Through her, Balzac portrays a decadent aristocracy, where the heirs suffer from a hereditary disease and she sacrifices her happiness for them. Félix, lacking maternal and feminine love, is attracted to the life of this mother, opening himself to a strange and morbid eroticism. Together, Félix and Henriette seek refuge in an impossible love to face the violence of the world.

Honoré de Balzac was a French novelist and playwright. The novel sequence La Comédie humaine, described as a panorama of post-Napoleonic French life, is generally viewed as his magnum opus.
