«Lazarillo de Tormes» is the anonymous picaresque novel of the Spanish Golden Age, published by Austral in paperback (144 pages, in Spanish).
Lázaro, a boy born by the river Tormes, recounts in the first person his childhood and his service to several masters, from whom he receives mistreatment and learns to survive through cunning. The narration, in the form of a letter, combines humour and social criticism to portray sixteenth-century Spain and is considered a precursor of the modern novel.
