In less than a year and a half, five teenage sisters, daughters of a fervent Catholic who forbade them from going out with boys, committed suicide. Twenty years later, several men who were their neighbors try to unravel the enigma of those deaths, related to the mysteries of femininity and desire. This splendid first novel by Jeffrey Eugenides has been made into a film with great success by Sophia Coppola. A moving and disturbing story that explores the complexity of adolescence and the impact of isolation.
