In a small house near Rabat, Abdellah lives with his parents and eight siblings. As a teenager, he discovers sensuality with his older brother. When his brother falls in love with a woman, he feels abandoned. After leaving for Switzerland, he does not find the freedom he hoped for, but exclusion and romantic disappointments. 'L'Armée du salut' is a moving novel about the search for identity and self-acceptance in a world full of prejudices and difficulties.
Abdellah Taïa is a Moroccan writer and filmmaker who writes in the French language and has been based in Paris since 1999. He has published nine novels, many of them heavily autobiographical. His books have been translated into Arabic and many European languages.
