This novel, along with the film of the same name, has become a cult classic for generations. A tyrannical German high school professor, a staunch defender of the established order, finds himself a subject of passion and ruins himself for the love of a singer met in a low-end club, 'The Blue Angel'. The story is a sharp caricature of the German school system in the Wilhelmine era and a critique of bourgeois decadence through the tragic-grotesque story of its main character.

Luiz Heinrich Mann, best known as simply Heinrich Mann, was a German writer known for his sociopolitical novels. From 1930 until 1933, he was president of the fine poetry division of the Prussian Academy of Arts. His fierce criticism of the growing Fascism and Nazism forced him to flee Germany after the Nazis came to power during 1933. He was the elder brother of writer Thomas Mann.
