«La Storia, tome 1» is the historical novel by Elsa Morante, published by Gallimard in paperback, in French.
Set in Rome during World War II, the novel follows Ida, a half-Jewish schoolteacher who, after being raped by a German soldier, gives birth to Useppe. Mother and son make their way through the misery and violence of the war, surrounded by characters who, like them, endure historical events without ever understanding them. Morante builds a choral tale about survival and the human condition.
First volume of La Storia, originally published in 1974. Finalist for the 1978 National Book Award in the translation category.
For readers of historical novels and twentieth-century European classics, especially those interested in Italy during World War II.
