Synopsis of La paciencia de la araña

In the twelfth installment of the Montalbano series, Salvo is recovering from injuries sustained in his last case. The commissioner feels confused and a heartbreaking melancholy leads him to question the ultimate meaning of justice. In such a state, he is informed of the kidnapping of the young Susanna Mistretta, and although the investigations are a matter for Commissioner Minutolo, something makes him jump out of bed. Perhaps it is the need to prove to himself that he still retains all his capacity for reaction, or perhaps the unusual circumstances of the kidnapping, given that the young woman's family had lost all their fortune years ago suddenly and mysteriously. In the end, both reasons are crucial, since this new distancing, this skepticism, is what will lead the commissioner to consider aspects of the investigation that anyone else would overlook. In this context, as new as it is difficult to assimilate, the resolution of the case will test his true values, his fears and his beliefs.
