«La mendiante de Shigatze» is the short story collection by Ma Jian published by Actes Sud in paperback (109 pages, in French).
Five stories portraying a Tibet seen by a Chinese writer, far from exoticism: the harshness of daily life, rites such as sky burials and extreme violence coexist with fascination for a people that resists merging into greater China. A raw and disturbing gaze that censorship could not ignore.
Translated from Chinese by Isabelle Bijon, with an introduction by Marc de Gouvenain. Part of the Babel collection from Actes Sud.
For readers interested in travel literature, Tibetan reality and contemporary Chinese narrative.
