«La Joueuse de go» is the historical novel by Shan Sa, published by Grasset in paperback (342 pages, in French).
In Manchuria in the 1930s, occupied by Japan, the novel alternates the voices of a sixteen-year-old girl skilled at the game of go and a Japanese officer devoted to the imperial ideal. Between games, the girl seeks her own destiny as war and repression intensify around her.
Originally published in 2001, it won the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens 2001 and the Kiriyama Prize 2004; the English translation is by Adriana Hunter.

Shan Sa is the pseudonym of Yan Ni, a French author and painter. The Girl Who Played Go was the first of her novels to be published outside France, and won the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens. Her second novel to appear in English translation was Empress (2006). She was awarded chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in July 2009 and chevalier of the Ordre national du Mérite in May 2011.
