«La Descente au paradis» is the novel by writer Paula Jacques, published by Folio in paperback (352 pages, in French).
The protagonist fantasizes about his own death and sees himself at his funeral in Bassatines, watching who weeps for him. His wife Adora will not shed tears, and that certainty awakens in him a torrent of jealousy and resentment; the novel also alludes to a desire for universal catastrophe, to love, and to the hardness of the grave.
The work originally appeared in 1995 at Mercure de France; the 1997 Folio edition includes the complete text.
For the general public with a command of French interested in literary fiction.
Paula Jacques is a French novelist, journalist, and host of the programme Cosmopolitaine on the French public station France Inter.
