«La dependienta» is the contemporary fiction novel by Sayaka Murata, published by Duomo Ediciones in paperback (176 pages, in Spanish).
Keiko Furukura, 36 and single, works part-time at a konbini, a Japanese supermarket open 24 hours. She doesn't quite fit into society, but in the store she finds a world governed by a manual that tells her how to act. Her surroundings, however, expect her to leave that routine behind and form a home as a conventional adult woman.
The novel won the Akutagawa Prize in 2016 and was originally published in Japanese as Konbini ningen. The Spanish translation of this work is by Marina Bornás.
For readers of contemporary fiction and Japanese narrative, especially those who enjoy unusual protagonists and a critical look at social pressure.
