The Charterhouse of Parma is a 19th-century novel by the French author Stendhal. Published in 1839, the story is set mainly in Italy and follows the life of Fabrizio del Dongo, a young aristocrat who becomes involved in political and love intrigues. The novel is known for its realistic portrayal of Italian society at the time and for its exploration of themes such as love, ambition and freedom.

Marie-Henri Beyle, better known by his pen name Stendhal, was a French writer. Best known for the novels Le Rouge et le Noir and La Chartreuse de Parme, he is highly regarded for the acute analysis of his characters' psychology and considered one of the early and foremost practitioners of realism. A self-proclaimed egotist, the neologism for the same characteristic in his characters was "Beylism".
