This family novel spans from the fifties to the beginning of the new millennium, passing through the year of German reunification in 1989. It focuses on three generations: the grandparents, convinced communists, return from Mexican exile to the young GDR to contribute to the construction of the new republic. Their son, who emigrated to Moscow as a young man and later deported to a Siberian camp, undertakes the journey from the other end of the world, the Urals. He returns with his Russian wife to a petty-bourgeois republic, in whose capacity for change he still wants to believe. However, the adopted homeland of parents and grandparents becomes increasingly small for the grandson, until, precisely on the ninetieth birthday of the patriarch, he goes to the West. The power of the political utopia seems to darken from generation to generation: it is the time of diminishing light.

Eugen Ruge is a German writer, director and translator from Russian. In 2011 he won the German Book Prize for In Times of Fading Light.
