Precursora de la novela de investigación judicial, 'Historia de la columna infame' se publicó originalmente como apéndice de 'Los novios'. Alessandro Manzoni analiza los hechos que se remontan a 1630 en Milán, bajo dominio español, durante una epidemia de peste. Una acusación lleva a la tortura y condena a muerte de varios individuos.
