«Het vrome volk» is Maarten 't Hart's collection of short stories, published by Arbeiderspers in paperback (141 pages, in Dutch).
A collection of autobiographical short stories in which Maarten 't Hart evokes with irony and nostalgia the Reformed environment of his youth. In stories such as «Het paard», «De neef van Mata Hari» and «Hoogzomer in april», the protagonists clash with the intolerance and indifference of their surroundings, in a critical yet playful look at the world of his childhood.
It belongs to the Grote ABC series (no. 236) and was awarded the Multatuliprijs in 1975.
For readers of Dutch literature interested in social satire and a nostalgic look at religiosity.
