«Herejes» is the crime and historical novel by Leonardo Padura, published by Tusquets Editores in hardback (520 pages, in Spanish).
In 1939, the ship S.S. Saint Louis, with nine hundred Jews who had fled Germany, remains anchored off Havana while the authorities refuse to allow the refugees to disembark. Among them travels a small Rembrandt canvas hidden away, which has belonged to the Kaminsky family since the seventeenth century; the plan to use it as a safe-conduct fails and the ship returns to Germany. In 2007, when that painting comes up for auction in London, Elías, son of Daniel Kaminsky, travels to Havana and asks former policeman Mario Conde for help in reconstructing what happened to the painting and to his own family.
Novel from the Andanzas collection (number 813) of Tusquets Editores. Investigator Mario Conde reappears as the protagonist of Leonardo Padura's crime series.
Recommended for readers of crime and historical fiction, and for followers of the novels featuring Mario Conde.
