«Halting State» is Charles Stross's science fiction novel, published by Orbit in paperback (400 pages, in English).
In the Edinburgh of 2018, an absurd robbery filmed by Hayek Associates' security cameras is committed by orcs and a dragon: it is the heist of a virtual bank inside a video game. When the bodies of real people begin to appear, Sergeant Sue Smith, programmer Jack Reed and forensic accountant Elaine Barnaby follow an investigation that crosses the boundary between the real and the virtual.
First instalment of the «Halting State» series by Charles Stross. ISBN-10: 1841496650. Published in 2008 by Orbit.
