«Geschichte vom alten Kind» is a novel by German author Jenny Erpenbeck, published by Eichborn in paperback (106 pages, in German).
A girl appears at night on a street with an empty bucket in her hand: no one knows her name, where she comes from, or who her parents are, and she doesn't seem to know either. Placed in a home and schooled, she is wrapped in a strange formlessness that rejects contact; only sometimes is it hinted that she knows more than she says.
The novel was first published in 1999; the ISBN-13 of this edition is 9783821807843.
For readers of contemporary German fiction seeking a short, enigmatic story focused on childhood and identity.
Jenny Erpenbeck is a German writer and opera director. She won the 2015 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize for The End of Days and the 2024 International Booker Prize for Kairos.
