«Galgenlieder / Der Gingganz» is the collection of absurd and grotesque humorous poems by Christian Morgenstern, published by Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag in paperback (160 pages, in German).
Considered the founder of nonsense poetry in German, Morgenstern populates these verses with impossible creatures and objects, wordplay, and absurd situations. Beneath their playful surface lie a philosophical irony and an original exploration of language; the author described them as written by a big child for big children.
Part of the dtv series, number 124; this is the eighth edition, from May 1970. The original work was published in 1905.
For readers of classic German poetry, lovers of absurd humour and early 20th-century European literature.
Christian Otto Josef Wolfgang Morgenstern was a German writer and poet from Munich. Morgenstern married Margareta Gosebruch von Liechtenstern on 7 March 1910. He worked for a while as a journalist in Berlin, but spent much of his life traveling through Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, primarily in a vain attempt to recover his health. His travels, though they failed to restore him to health, allowed him to meet many of the foremost literary and philosophical figures of his time in central Europe.
