In France during World War I, Alfa Ndiaye and Mademba Diop are two Senegalese soldiers fighting for the French army. When Mademba is mortally wounded, Alfa is left alone and consumed by rage. Alienated by the brutality of war, Alfa embarks on a mission of revenge, sowing terror among his fellow soldiers. After being evacuated from the front, Alfa confronts the memories of his past in Africa, a world he thought lost but now resurfaces as an act of resistance against the barbarity of modern war. This novel explores themes of brotherhood, identity, and the dehumanization caused by war.
