Este libro de Gianni Oliva aborda las masacres de italianos en la Venezia Giulia e Istria, conocidas como las Foibe. Tras el final de la guerra en mayo-junio de 1945, miles de italianos fueron asesinados por el ejército yugoslavo de Tito, muchos arrojados a las foibe (sumideros kársticos) que se convirtieron en fosas comunes, y otros deportados a campos en Eslovenia y Croacia, donde murieron por privaciones y enfermedades.
