«Espontánea» is the young adult novel by Aaron Starmer, published by Gran Travesía in paperback (362 pages, in Spanish).
«Espontánea» starts from an absurd premise: in Mara Carlyle's final year of high school, a classmate explodes in the middle of class, and soon other cases of spontaneous combustion follow. The narration mixes black humour and everyday register to follow Mara as she tries to graduate in one piece amid a love story, quarantines, hallucinogenic mushrooms, bloggers, ice-cream trucks, secret agents and the nation's president's crudest opinions. Beneath the extravagance, the book reflects on the absurd and raw truths of being a teenager.
The novel was chosen as one of the best novels of 2016 by TIME magazine, is recommended by John Green, and the film rights have been sold. The reading is recommended from age 14.
