In the last months of 1944, with almost half a million Hungarian Jews deported to extermination camps and the Danube turned into a mass grave, the embassies of neutral countries try to save the persecuted refugees in Budapest. In the Spanish legation, Ángel Sanz Briz and a group of Francoists apply the instructions of the Franco government to protect the Jews, seeking safe passage in the face of the imminent Nazi defeat. Arcadi Espada narrates this Hungarian winter, exploring the truth of the facts and the brilliance of the legend.
Arcadi Espada is a Spanish writer and journalist.
