«Emilia Galotti» is the bourgeois tragedy by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, published by Reclam Philipp Jun. in paperback (102 pages, in German).
Drama in five acts premiered in 1772, one of the key works of bourgeois theatre and the German Enlightenment. It criticises the arbitrary power of the aristocracy against the morality of the middle class: young Emilia Galotti, about to marry Count Appiani, arouses the desire of Prince Hettore Gonzaga, whose intrigue triggers a tragic outcome.
Part of Reclams Universal-Bibliothek (number 45). German edition.

Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was a German philosopher, dramatist, publicist and art critic. He was a representative of the Enlightenment. His plays and theoretical writings substantially influenced the development of German literature. He is widely considered by theatre historians to be the first dramaturg in his role at Abel Seyler's Hamburg National Theatre. The word "dramaturgy" first appears in his work Hamburg Dramaturgy.
