In 1933, an eighteen-year-old embarks on a journey on foot from Rotterdam to Constantinople. This book narrates his journey to Hungary, going up the Rhine and down the Danube, staying overnight in stables and castles. Throughout his journey, he discovers freedom, camaraderie, languages, arts, landscapes, religions, history and the people of various civilizations, all in the context of the storm that is brewing in Europe. 'The Time of Gifts' is a travelogue that captures the essence of a Europe on the eve of World War II, through the eyes of a young adventurer.

Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor was an English writer, scholar, soldier and polyglot. He played a prominent role in the Cretan resistance during the Second World War, and was widely seen as Britain's greatest living travel writer, on the basis of books such as A Time of Gifts (1977). A BBC journalist once termed him "a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene".
