«El rey y la reina» is a novel by Ramón J. Sender, published by Destino in paperback (179 pages, in Spanish).
Set in a Madrid palace before the Civil War, the novel pits the Duchess of Arlanza against the gardener Rómulo: her desire clashes with his ethics. On 18 July 1936, militiamen take the palace, she hides, and Rómulo assumes power. The fall of hierarchies becomes an allegory of the Spain of the time.
It corresponds to number 5 of the Destinolibro collection; the edition is dated 1972.
It will interest readers of twentieth-century Spanish narrative, particularly those seeking historical fiction with an allegorical backdrop.
