The destiny of Dmitri Ress could be measured in long years of struggle, dreams, and suffering, or in the intensity of his love for a woman. In this work, Andreï Makine explores the wounds suffered in body and soul while caught in the violence of the clash between the West and Russia, transcending the simple weighing of Good and Evil to rediscover humble and essential moments where the value of love and the stimulating intimacy of being are found. With a sober and powerful style, the author transcribes the mysterious symphony of these moments of grace. The protagonists live in the truth of passions that are rarely spoken, in the very heart of history and far from the brutal clamor of the world, reminding us that, as written in these pages, 'love is subversive by essence'.
