Berlin, 1955, in the midst of the Cold War. Leonard, a young English communications technician, is sent to work on a joint project of the British and American intelligence services, "Operation Gold." After a brief exploration of Berlin life, Leonard discovers the nature of the project: the installation of a telephone exchange to intercept communications between the Soviet occupation army and Moscow, in a tunnel that penetrates into Russian Berlin. But Berlin will be much more than a labyrinth of spies for Leonard: he will meet Maria, a divorced German woman somewhat older than him, and the work on the tunnel will alternate with that of love. Maria and Berlin will be the young man's initiation into almost all the "things of life."
