In 'The Gladiator', Macro and Cato return to Rome after their adventures in Palmyra, but a storm takes them to Crete, devastated by an earthquake and plunged into chaos. There, an old acquaintance, now a gladiator, leads a slave revolt. Macro and Cato must impose order amidst anarchy, facing scarcity, epidemics, and rebellion, in a struggle to restore Roman authority on the island.
