Synopsis of El cirujano de Al-Andalus

«El cirujano de Al-Andalus» is the historical novel by Antonio Cavanillas de Blas, published by La Esfera de los Libros in hardback (384 pages, in Spanish).

In tenth-century Córdoba, Abul Qasim, personal physician to Caliph Abd al-Rahman III, practises surgery far advanced for his time: cataracts, hernias, goitres, tracheotomies and amputations. The novel recreates the splendour of the caliphate, the souk, the harem and the protagonist's journey to Baghdad in search of knowledge.

The author, a surgeon by profession, published this novel in April 2009 within the Historical Novel collection.
