In the 1st century, Pomponio Flato travels through the confines of the Roman Empire in search of waters with portentous effects. Chance leads him to Nazareth, where the town's carpenter is to be executed for the death of a wealthy citizen. Much to his regret, Pomponio finds himself immersed in solving the crime, hired by the carpenter's son, a candid and unique child, convinced of his father's innocence, a peaceful man, but who hides a great secret. This novel by Eduardo Mendoza is an original and ironic detective plot, which leads to a literary satire and a creation of inexhaustible novelistic vitality.
