«El año que rompí contigo» is the novel by Jorge Eduardo Benavides, published by Alfaguara in paperback (344 pages, in Spanish).
In Lima, shortly before Fujimori came to power, five middle-class young people —university students, journalists and taxi drivers— live oblivious to the country's crisis: terrorist violence and runaway inflation. They discover that ignoring reality is a mistake that ends up closing in on them. Lima, loved and hated, corrupt and violent, is the other protagonist.
The novel was originally published in 2003 in Alfaguara's Hispánica collection. Jorge Eduardo Benavides was born in Arequipa (Peru) in 1964.
For adult readers looking for contemporary fiction in Spanish with a Peruvian historical and social backdrop.
