«El Anatomista» is the historical novel by Federico Andahazi, published by Planeta in 1997 in paperback (282 pages, in Spanish).
In sixteenth-century Venice, the anatomist Mateo Colón investigates the nature of female desire and discovers the clitoris, an organ unknown in the West. When he tries to publicize his finding, he clashes with the Inquisition and must face a trial that puts his life at stake. The novel recreates the Renaissance atmosphere and addresses sexuality, power and repression, with intrigue, humour and irony.
The work is set in the Renaissance and its protagonist is named Mateo Colón, in parallel with the navigator Christopher Columbus. According to the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the novel's erotic theme led to the withdrawal of the prize from the Fundación Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat.
Recommended for readers of historical and Latin American fiction interested in the Renaissance, the Inquisition and the history of sexuality.

Federico Andahazi is an Argentine writer and psychologist.
