«Die Wahrheit über Hänsel und Gretel» is the literary satire by Hans Traxler, published by Reclam Philipp Jun. in paperback (149 pages, in German).
The book recreates the research of Professor Georg Ossegg of Aschaffenburg, who read the Brothers Grimm fairy tale as a real report and founded 'fairy-tale archaeology'. With photos, drawings, maps and forged documents, Traxler builds an erudite parody that turns Hänsel and Gretel into a humorous academic forgery.
It belongs to the Reclams Universal-Bibliothek series (No. 18495). This 2007 German edition recovers the text that appeared in 1963 and includes the appendix 'Grausame Tatsachen!'.
For students and readers who want to revisit the Brothers Grimm fairy tales with irony; the Reclam edition adds study materials.
