«Die Schnapsstadt» is the satirical novel by Mo Yan, published by Unionsverlag in paperback (511 pages, in German).
Ding Gou'er, a special investigator, travels to Jiuguo, the so-called «city of schnapps», to verify rumours of cannibalism among China's new elite. There he discovers a delirious world dominated by banquets, corruption, superstition and greed, in which reality is distorted and moral boundaries blur.
This title was originally published in Chinese in 1992 as «酒国» (Jiuguo); the German edition is from 2005.
For readers of contemporary Chinese literature and magical realism with an interest in social and political satire.
