«Die Piratenamsel» is the children's novel by Uwe Timm and Gunnar Matysiak, published by Dtv in paperback (101 pages, in German).
Padde, a myna from India who has arrived in Hamburg, can imitate sounds: he roars like a tiger and swears like a sailor. Between a pet shop, the zoo and a voice imitator, the bird seeks a home, which he finds with his friends on a Rhine boat with a girl. An animal story, funny and at the same time critical of pet ownership.
The work was originally published in 1983; this 2000 edition belongs to the Dtv Junior collection and bears the subtitle «Ein Kinderroman».
Recommended for young readers aged 10 and up, with an animal story full of humour.
Uwe Timm is a German writer.
