A strange testament and a long-atoned crime: for years, 54-year-old library clerk Maertens sat in prison for the murder of his professor. Now back in freedom, he lives completely withdrawn. But suddenly his carefully devised existence is thrown out of balance: his once best friend Tomas has died and left him an unusual inheritance. As Maertens enters it, it gradually becomes clear to him that his friend brutally betrayed him years ago.
