«De part de la princesa morta» is the historical novel by Kenizé Mourad, published by labutxaca in paperback (720 pages, in Catalan).
The Turkish princess Selma flees her country when the First World War breaks out, crosses Lebanon with her husband, a Muslim rajah, and in India they separate. Pregnant with her only daughter, she travels west and gives birth in Nazi-occupied Paris. By narrating the life of a mother she never knew, Mourad also reconstructs the gaps in her own biography.
Work originally published in French in 1987; this edition includes the translation by Antoni Serra Solà. Winner of the Grand Prix des lectrices de Elle in 1988.
For readers who enjoy contemporary fiction and stories of exile, identity and family memory.
