This anthology of stories by Anton Chekhov, selected and with a prologue by José Muñoz Millanes, offers a journey through the most characteristic stories of the Russian author. The protagonists of these narratives glimpse signs of a change that will free them from a monotonous life, but these illusions turn out to be deceptive, intensifying their frustration. The sequence of stories highlights the importance of details, atmosphere, fragmentary character, and irony, elements that are also found in Chekhov's dramatic works. The translation from Russian is by Víctor Gallego Ballesteros. The volume includes the story 'The Bride', which opens a horizon of hope, and the overwhelming story 'The Student', which explores the balance between suffering and hope in nature and history.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a Russian playwright and short story writer. Widely considered one of the greatest writers of all time, his career as a playwright produced four classics, and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics. Along with Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg, Chekhov is often referred to as one of the three seminal figures in the birth of early modernism in the theatre. Chekhov was a physician by profession. "Medicine is my lawful wife," he once said, "and literature is my mistress."
