«Crispín: la cruz de plomo» is the historical and adventure novel by Avi, published by Ediciones SM in paperback (256 pages, in Spanish).
In the 14th century, Crispín, a thirteen-year-old peasant, is orphaned when his mother dies and is declared a «cabeza de lobo»: anyone can end his life. Crispín flees with a lead cross bearing a mysterious inscription as his only inheritance and meets Oso, a minstrel who hides a dangerous secret; together they seek the truth about Crispín's past.
It is part of the El Barco de Vapor Roja collection (no. 156) and of the Crispín series, of which it is the first installment. The original work received the Newbery Medal in 2003.
Recommended for young readers aged 12 and up and for those who enjoy historical and adventure novels set in the Middle Ages.
