«Bérénice» is the tragedy by Jean Racine, published by Le Livre de Poche in paperback in French.
Tragedy in five acts premiered in 1670. Titus loves the foreign queen Bérénice, but Roman law prevents him from marrying her; Antiochus loves her hopelessly. Titus tries to make Bérénice accept the separation and she resists. Racine turns the breakup into an elegiac drama: the characters choose a humane, courteous and exemplary solution.
Premiered at the Hôtel de Bourgogne in 1670. Edition by Georges Forestier in the Le Théâtre de Poche collection.
Suitable for students of French and for those new to classical French theatre.

Jean-Baptiste Racine was a French dramatist, one of the three great playwrights of 17th-century France, along with Molière and Corneille, as well as an important literary figure in the Western tradition and world literature. Racine was primarily a tragedian, producing such "examples of neoclassical perfection" as Phèdre, Andromaque, and Athalie. He did write one comedy, Les Plaideurs, and a muted tragedy, Esther, for the young.
