«Bartleby le scribe» is the short novel by Herman Melville, published by Folio in paperback format (108 pages, in French).
In a Wall Street office, the scrivener Bartleby baffles everyone by answering any request with a serene «preferiría no hacerlo». His refusal, incomprehensible to those around him, gradually isolates him until he becomes a symbol of passive resistance against the demands of work.
This French edition dates from 1996. It is volume 2903 of the Folio collection, with a translation by Pierre Leyris and an appendix by Philippe Jaworski; the work was originally published in 1853.
A classic that has fascinated writers and philosophers such as Maurice Blanchot, Georges Bataille, Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze.

Herman Melville was an American writer of the American Renaissance period. Among his best-known works are Moby-Dick (1851), Typee (1846), a romanticized account of his experiences in Polynesia, and Billy Budd, Sailor, a posthumously published novella. At the time of his death, Melville was not well known to the public, but 1919, the centennial of his birth, was the starting point of a Melville revival. Moby-Dick would eventually be considered one of the Great American Novels.
