Realitat i somni de la ciutat presents Narcís Oller as an intellectual of his time concerned about his country and especially about the entity of Barcelona as the capital of Catalonia and as a great city that could not be left behind on the road to modernity and progress. Oller is interested in this question from the moment the Catalan capital is transformed from a provincial city that looked to Madrid into the embryo of a European capital that wants to be reflected, preferably, in the urban Paris of the Universal Exhibition of 1878, which was already beginning to become the great modern city, the nerve center of fin-de-siècle Europe. Oller begins this activity from journalism, first with a pseudonym or with his initials and later with his name, in order to directly influence both public opinion and the decisions of municipal managers. The initial study by Rosa Cabré is a reading of the narrative work of the great Vallès novelist understood as a plea in favor of urban life and, at the same time, a document that collects his way of looking, living, writing and mythologizing Barcelona. This study is accompanied by the texts of Narcís Oller's journalistic articles dedicated to Barcelona, which, in their entirety, have never been cited in any of this author's bibliographies and are now collected for the first time in this volume. The final study by Carola Duran makes it easier to understand the context and specific references of these collaborations in the press, as well as Oller's relationship with certain media.
Narcís Oller i de Moragas was a Catalan lawyer and novelist who initially wrote in the traditions of literary realism and naturalism, later adapting his style to the Modernisme movement, the Catalan equivalent of Art Nouveau. Despite his stylistic evolution, he is considered one of the leading Catalan authors of the 19th century.
