Larra's costumbrista articles where, with irony and a critical eye, he portrays the ills of Spanish society: laziness, apathy, nepotism, ignorance, stale traditionalism, and appearances prevailing over truth. The author's growing pessimism does not dim his fine humour, and his diagnosis invites reflection on Spanish reality.
It is part of the NyC-Biblioteca de Aula collection, number 6, and the edition is by Magdalena Velasco.
Intended for students and readers of Spanish literary classics; recommended reading age from 16 years.
Mariano José de Larra y Sánchez de Castro was a Spanish romantic writer and journalist best known for his numerous essays and his infamous suicide. His works were often satirical and critical of the 19th-century Spanish society, and focused on both the politics and customs of his time.
